Steinway & Sons has launched another limited edition grand piano. This stylish new instrument is a collaboration between Steinway and the French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. This time the piano comes from Steinway’s European factory in Hamburg, Germany.
Duchaufour-Lawrance is an established sculptor, and product and interior designer. He has created products for major brands such as Hermès, Saint Louis, LIgne Roset, Baccarat, and Petite Friture. And he has designed interiors for Air France, the Ciel de Paris, and famously London’s Sketch — possibly the most Instagrammed restaurant ever! (check out the pod loos!).
One of Duchaufour-Lawrance’s fortes is his furniture design. And it was these skills that prompted Steinway to approach the designer back in 2020. Duchaufour-Lawrance was delighted by the opportunity to work with the eminent company.
“I have long admired Steinway for its timeless design and artistic excellence. It was a dream to create a modern interpretation of this classic instrument and something that only happens once in a lifetime.
I thought how curved traces of ink become notes on paper and how those notes become music that travels as if ripples in the air. The immateriality of sound, the fluidity of time and the resonance with space combined with these sensual lines were my inspiration”Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance
The Steinway & Sons Noé Limited Edition is a stylish instrument featuring a rim with rather unusual graceful contours, best viewed from the bent side. Duchaufour-Lawrance refers to this shape as “emotional curves”, and the form is complimented by the piano’s rounded legs and the distinctive braced metallic lyre that supports the pedals.
The Noé Limited Edition is available in ivory white, burgundy red, or midnight blue. Harmonious wood veneers are added to specific parts of the casework adding visual highlights. The plate and fittings are supplied with either a silver or gold finish.
The piano was unveiled during a private concert at Paris’ Palais de Tokyo featuring acclaimed pianist Yuja Wang.
Steinway will produce just 18 Noé Limited Edition Model D-274 concert grands, and 88 Model B-211 “Salon” grands. All will include Steinway’s SPIRIO| r player piano system, and come with an individually numbered plaque located on the inside of the rim.
The price and availability of this limited edition are available on request from Steinway Hamburg.
